Rescue
Training
In
industry the ability to rescue staff from work site accidents is an
important concern. Employers have a legal duty to provide some means
of rescuing employees. For
example, OSHA regulations state:
"The employer shall provide for prompt rescue
of employees in the event of a fall or shall assure that employees are
able to rescue themselves."
Many
employers have traditionally relied upon emergency services like fire
departments for rescue services. However, factors such as incomplete
response planning, unfamiliarity of work site concerns by the responding
rescue service and the scarcity of specialized "high angle" skills can
conspire to provide an inadequate rescue. Recently more employers are
realizing immediate rescue services must be performed in-house. Quick
response by proficient co-workers combined with an overlapping response
from fire/rescue services can save live and limb. Employers are training
workers in basic, safe rescue methods that can be employed on-site immediately.
